A Glimpse into History
Isle Royale National Park history is as rich as its natural wonders. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ojibwa and Chippewa, the island later became a hub for fur trading in the 19th century. With the discovery of copper deposits, mining operations flourished briefly in the late 1800s, leaving behind remnants of a bygone era scattered across the island.
In 1940, Isle Royale was designated as a national park, preserving its pristine ecosystems and unique geology for future generations. Today, it stands as the least-visited national park in the contiguous United States, offering visitors a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in untouched wilderness.
